• Ask your family doctor or gynecologist for a referral, or ask NABCO. Your doctor can also contact the American Society of Clinical Oncology at (703) 299-0150 or www.asco.org to be referred to local surgical oncologists who are ASCO members. The American Board of Medical Specialists at (800) 776-2378 can verify a physician's board certification by specialty and year, and will refer callers to local board-certified doctors. Many State Health Departments now maintain a "Consumer Information" section of their websites that includes an updated, alphabetical listing of state physicians who have been cited for professional misconduct.
   
•  Call the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service at (800) 4-CANCER for the names of NCI-affiliated treatment centers in your state, including members of the NCI's CCOP program. If none of these centers is conveniently located, call the Department of Surgery at the nearest one and ask for a local referral.
   
•  For referrals to a plastic surgeon for corrective or reconstructive procedures, call the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons' referral service at (800) 635-0635 and a list of several local board-certified plastic surgeons will be mailed to you.
