ALCOHOL INCREASES RISK OF BREAST CANCER

This is the largest study to date on diet and breast cancer which demonstrated a 40 % increase risk of breast cancer in women who consumed 2 or more drinks of alcohol daily. The study was conducted in 6 areas of Italy. There were 2,569 women with no breast complaints and 2,588 women with non-cancerous breast disorders. None of the women had a history of cancer. No interaction was noted between alcohol drinking and body mass index, smoking or any other co-variate in this multivariate analysis. The risk of breast cancer was higher in premenopausal than in postmenopausal women. Alcohol intake may be a major avoidable cause of breast cancer.
