MASTECTOMY ALTERNATIVE OFTEN IGNORED

Dr. Monica Morrow, Director of the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago stated that 90% of women with Stage 1 breast cancer (lymph node-negative tumors that are equal to or under 2 cm) could undergo breast conserving therapy and 70 % of women with Stage 2 breast cancer ( lymph nodes showing metastatic disease or tumors over 2cm) could undergo breast conserving therapy. Yet, she reported that more than half of those eligible, in 1994, to save their breast, underwent mastectomy. Dr. Morrow urged doctors not to use age, prognosis or tumor type to guide surgical options of mastectomy or lumpectomy (breast conservation) and encouraged women who are told they need a mastectomy to seek another opinion. Dr. Morrow presented this at the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
