If the mammogram is abnormal...

If the mammogram demonstrates calcifications, little white dots on the mammogram that are indeed calcifications, the radiologist may recommend a biopsy. This can be accomplished with image-guidance techniques called a stereotactic or mammotome™ biopsy- - using a computerized mammogram machine to guide the needle which samples the calcium. Sometimes the calcium may be completely removed and a small titanium (metal) clip is left in the area of the biopsy to guide surgery if this is necessary.
